Nahda is a Muslim youth movement based in Sydney, Australia.
Formed in early 2007, Nahda kicked off being called “The Nahda Crew”, a group of eight young Muslim brothers who would get together every fortnight to discuss the deen of Islam among themselves. As they started inviting their friends to attend with them, the garage that was their initial meeting place became insufficient. The gathering grew from 8 to 20, then to 30, and eventually the brothers behind it realised that “the NC” (as it became known) had the potential to positively effect the lives of many young Muslims.
The Nahda Crew, as it was called until recently, organised fortnightly gatherings for young Muslim brothers and invited older, more knowledgable mentors from the Muslim community to address them. Topics of discussion and discourse ranged from Fiqh (Islamic law) to Aqeedah (belief), from politics to tazkiyyah (purification of the soul) and from gender issues to coping with life in a western country.
The Nahda crew organised its first camp in the summer of 2007. This camp, attended by some fourty young brothers, was an extraordinarily successful bonding exercise, serving to pull many of them close together and forge friendships that will last a lifetime.
With its potential evident, this youth movement has had to look at offering what it has to more young Muslims – this website is a reflection of this, as is its renaming to a generic “Nahda” to reflect an appeal to all young Muslims, not just those of the teenage category.
Nahda’s activities can be split into the regular and non-regular events that it holds. Please click here for more information of Nahda’s initiatives. Its regular activities include the fortnightly gatherings held currently in the Muslim heartland of Sydney (Lakemba). Along side this, some big plans are in store to kick off a similar initiative in another part of Sydney – stay tuned for this!
Alongside these, Nahda holds special youth events every holiday period, and in specific during the long summer break each year. These activities include massive barbeque-cum-sports days, usually attended by about 130 or so brothers, youth qiyaam ul layl sessions (night prayer and worship) and other such activities.
Nahda has some big plans in store for the near future, and events and activities that it previously has never held before are on the agenda. Stay tuned for more at the home of Nahda on the internet.
